What a tragic week, with the loss of a young father, husband, son, and friend to many. I didn’t know Charlie, but I can say that no matter what one’s political views, we should be saddened and angered by such political violence. This seems like a trend: this year a political attack in Minnesota that took State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, arson at Gov. Shapiro’s home, last year multiple attempts on Pres. Trump’s life, and Nancy Pelosi’s husband was seriously wounded in 2022. But reactions to such violence have not been consistently and loudly critical, and effective action has been wanting.
Timed around tomorrow’s 24th anniversary of September 11, I participated in a timely webinar on the resurgent terrorist threat this morning, hosted by my friends at Global Guardian, alongside CEO Dale Buckner and Cheryl Steele, who provided practical advice for corporations from her vantage point as CSO of Starbucks. I didn’t dwell on political violence, because the fact is that terrorism and unclassified acts of violence, like school shootings, are all up. The causality is widely varied, with ideology sometimes being the driver (e.g., anti-semitism), but more and more violence and notoriety for conducting a violent act is the perpetrator’s only goal. The link is below.
Next Thursday, Global Guardian‘s webinar will be on strengthening campus security–both university and corporate settings–another timely topic given the scene of Charlie Kirk’s assassination today. Please see their LI for details.
