New questions about the production – and consumption – of the President’s Daily Brief
Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal, where are we?

The most colorfully quotable Senator, John Kennedy (R) Louisiana, told Fox news on Sunday, “Putin has reneged on every promise that he has made to President Trump…I think that Putin thinks that America has taken the bullet train to Chumptown.” Exactly right, Sen. Kennedy, and President Trump also increasingly appears to agree, saying this weekend, “maybe he is just tapping me along.”
China Won’t Replace the U.S. in the Middle East

At this moment, the Saudis have a far greater confluence of interests with the Russians on the price of oil than they do with the United States on regional security. That is because the Saudis and others have lost confidence that the United States is committed to regional security and stability.
The larger problem uncovered by the Signal scandal

Here is part of my take on SignalGate along with those of my friend and sometimes sparring partner, Gen. (ret.) Mark Kimmit. I might quibble with Mark’s point that Hegseth can just declassify anything he wants, only to the point that there has to be a lot of paper work in doing so and everywhere that info appears online and on paper must then be made unclassified…BUT, BUT, BUT…. that would be missing the point that I think we both agree upon: the info in that chat should NOT have been in SIGNAL. I will hazard a guess that this isn’t the first time SIGNAL has been MISused and contained classified/sensitive material. This should be a wake up call, not a circle-the-wagons moment. The right thing at this moment is to ensure that our comms are secure so that our adversaries cannot know what we’re doing and how we’re doing it.

On Gaza, Trump Says the Quiet Part Out Loud – and Then Some

Embedded in President Trump’s shocking proposal to “own” and develop the Gaza Strip are some uncomfortable truths and even some “common sense,” as he has described it. But then there is this: his plan is in fact ethnic cleansing, unacceptable morally and in clear violation of international law and norms.
How is War Fought in the Gray Zone? And what can the U.S. do about it?

In talks to business groups about geopolitics in recent months, I’ve been asking whether they believe we are at war. Most in the audience have voted yes. But if you asked the National Security Adviser, I’m fairly certain he would disagree, at least in the technical sense. This is in part political, because only Congress has the authority to formally declare war and, as hard as it is to believe, they haven’t done so since World War II.
How will President Trump handle intelligence in his second term?

Now that President Trump has been inaugurated, what can we expect for the intelligence community? On his first full day in his first term, he visited the CIA to voice support. But he has also displayed deep skepticism and accused spy agencies of undermining him. Beth Sanner is a highly decorated, retired career intelligence officer who briefed Trump with the President’s Daily Brief, a highly classified summary of the US most critical national security threats. She shares her thoughts on what lies ahead.
